Due to the removal of the nasal flumist vaccine from the market abruptly this year, Papago Buttes Pediatrics is already having trouble obtaining enough of our preferred vaccine this flu season.

As of this week, we are no longer able to order the single dose units of flu vaccine for children 3 years of age or older. For the remainder of this season, we will be going to multi-dose vials, only for that age range. For infants 6 months to 3 years, there is still plenty of the preservative-free version which we prefer.

All scientific evidence indicates this vaccine is both safe and effective but we must alert our patients that this preparation includes a preservative to keep it sterile. The preservative includes 25 micrograms of thimerosal per dose. Both the Academy of Pediatrics and the FDA consider this an appropriate dosage in this age group. If you have further questions about the flu vaccine in children over 3 please do not hesitate to speak with your regular doctor.

Thank You.
